Brockville – The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville will receive a total of 3,160,000 in funding through the Province’s Homelessness Prevention Program to help with local homelessness.
The funding was announced on Tuesday morning at the United Counties council chambers in Brockville by Minister Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP.
The amount the Counties are receiving is an increase of $1,567,700, or approximately 98 percent over last year.
Most of Leeds & Grenville’s municipal leaders were on hand for the announcement this morning.
Leeds and the Thousand Islands Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke, who is chair of the County’s Joint Services Committee, the committee that administers social services for both the 10 United Counties municipalities and the three separated municipalities, Brockville, Gananoque & Prescott said that statistics for March 2023 show there are close to 106 people experiencing homelessness in the area.
The funding announcement was so quick that the United Counties have yet to decide where the funding will go.
Provincially, the government is providing $202 million annually in the province’s Homelessness Prevention Program and Indigenous Supporting Housing Program, bringing Ontario’s total yearly investment in these programs to close to $700 million.
The additional funding will help those experiencing or at risk of homelessness and support community organizations delivering supportive housing.
