Labour Market Solutions: Free Employer Training – Hiring Immigrants

Brockville – Labour market shortages continue to be an issue locally and nationally. Several local organizations have come together to offer free training with regard to one potential solution: hiring immigrants.

The second series of free employer training being offered by the group, this set has been tailored based on feedback and is focused on practical skills for employers. The first of the new sessions is happening June 6th via Zoom and runs from 9:00 to 10:30 am. This training is all about Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) and work permits. The training will be led by Recruit Without Borders.

LMIAs are an important first step for many businesses looking to hire immigrants, as they are used to prove that there are no qualified candidates available locally, to ensure that the current Canadian labour pool is given a fair chance before anyone from outside the country is brought in.

“Hiring immigrants not only helps with the immediate labour gaps, but also helps businesses become more diverse, which in turn gives businesses more viewpoints, ideas, and new ways of looking at problems and solutions,” says Melissa Francis, Program Manager for the St. Lawrence-Rideau Immigration Partnership. “We received a lot of great feedback from our first training sessions, and one thing we heard was about the desire from employers for practical and immediately applicable training that can help them attract, hire, and retain immigrant employees.”

The combined work of CSE Consulting, the Employment + Education Centre, Every Kid in Our Communities, KEYS Job Centre, Lanark Community Child and Youth Services Collaborative, the St. Lawrence-Rideau Immigration Partnership, and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, these
training sessions are free to anyone who wishes to participate. The focus of the training is practical skills for employers who are exploring the possibility of hiring immigrants.

They will include the aforementioned LMIA exploration, how to create effective job postings, how to run inclusive and culturally sensitive interviews and information about foreign credential recognition. All training sessions will be free and offered over Zoom. These sessions will continue throughout the year.
