Gananoque – The Gananoque Police Service in partnership with the RCMP are reminding citizens of Gananoque and surrounding areas that all communities along the St. Lawrence River are at greater risk of all types of illegal smuggling and especially Human Smuggling due to their proximity to the international border.
Human Smuggling is a criminal enterprise that spans the globe. Human Smugglers facilitate, for profit, individuals entering Canada illegally, or using Canada as a passageway to the United States of America. By charging people large sums of money for their transportation, human smugglers have made a lucrative business out of illegal migration.
Human smuggling can take place in many forms, including by boat. Human smuggling undermines Canada’s security and public safety.
Indicators of Human Smuggling are:
- Remote or isolated pick-ups or drop-offs along the shoreline;
- Persons carrying luggage/baggage in remote locations along the border;
- Vessel traffic late at night, with lights out;
- ‘Border Probing’ behaviour by vehicles with out-of-province or out-of-country licence plates.
If you witness these suspicious behaviors, call the Gananoque Police Service at 613-382-4422, or the RCMP at 1-800-387-0020.
