Brockville – The Brockville Country Club Senior Men’s Invitational was played in unsettled weather on Friday, July 21st. 94 players teed it up on an afternoon that saw sunshine and rain mixed together. There were a solid number of entries in all four age categories: 50-59; 60-69; 70-79; and 80+.
Phil Patterson (50-59) from the Prescott Golf Club was declared the Overall Champion after tying with Ray Lumsden (70-79) from the host BCC. Both golfers shot excellent even par 72s, however, Golf Canada’s Retrogression was applied and Patterson was declared the winner. He received a Montreal Canadiens jersey signed by Honorary Tournament Chairman – Larry Robinson. David Wilgosh (50-59) was the Overall Low Net winner with a 68 (-4). He won a Titleist Vokey wedge.
Winners in each age group were as follows:
- 50-59 – Low Net: David Wilgosh. Low Gross: Phil Patterson
- 60-69 – Low Net: Phil Howlett; Low Gross: Chris Boyd
- 70-79 – Low Net: Ray Lumsden; Low Gross: Dennis Cameron
- 80+ – Low Net: Gary Locke; Low Gross: Bob Castle
Both Honorary Chair, Larry Robinson (5th Low Gross: 70-79) and Tournament Chair, David Dargie (3rd Low Gross: 70-79) made it to the large prize table, which was worth just south of $5000.00. Half of the field was prize recipients, thanks to the generosity of the tournament sponsors.
Along with the golf, the participants supported the United Way of Leeds & Grenville by purchasing Montreal Canadiens golf caps signed by Hockey Hall of Famer Robinson and his 1985-86 Stanley Cup teammate Rick Green, who also played in the tournament.
Their signed jerseys, along with one of Guy Carbonneau’s, were sold at auction. A 50/50 draw raised almost $1600, with the winner’s half being donated back to United Way by Keith Fraser, a BCC member. Lastly, golfers had a chance to try and sink the “Nick Taylor Putt” of 72’6” that won the RBC Canadian Open in a playoff.
There was a four-way tie that was broken and BCC’s Ted Allen was declared the winner. All told, $4555 was raised at this tournament for the United Way of Leeds & Grenville!
