Forthton – Splash Well Drilling out of Prescott joined the party this past Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway. A full card of racing provided plenty of action and some big wins for drivers in need of a good run. The night also saw a local favourite claim a career first.
The Action Sprint Tour National Series was ready for 25 laps of racing and Adam Turner wasted no time grabbing the lead over Ryan Poole, Josh Verne Jr., Matt Billings and Johnny Miller. After winning a Crate Late Model feature on August 2nd, Turner was looking to win in a record fifth different division at Brockville but had to survive plenty of early race yellows. Once the laps clicked off Turner remained in control but Matt Billings, who had been winless in 20 previous series races, was on the move taking 2nd from Ryan Poole on lap 8 and began to close in on Turner. On lap 17 Mike Bowman, who had come into the night off of two West Series wins and two 360 sprint car wins this week at Ohsweken, slowed to a stop in turn 4. On the restart, Turner remained in control and looked like he was on his way to breaking a record and winning his first tour race. However, Matt Billings had a faster car in the closing laps, as he reeled in Turner with Josh Verne Jr. running close by in third. On lap 21 Billings made the move for the lead off the top of turn 4, to grab the lead away. After 4 runner-up finishes including two this year, Matt Billings would finally claim his first career Action Sprint Tour Series win. Turner ran strong but settled for second, with Josh Verne Jr, Johnny Miller and Ryan Poole finishing 5th. Lee Ladouceur was solid on this night finishing 6th, good enough to claim the 2023 Trailer Pro Canada Crate Sprint Car Championship.
Brennan Moore already has one win this season, which was at the Can-Am Speedway back in May of this year. On Saturday night in the 25-lap DIRTCar Sportsman feature Moore was in front of a strong field over Greg Brinklow, Dylan Kirkland Xavier Andrews and William Racine. On a track that was fast in the early going, Moore took full advantage as he pulled away from everyone by straight away, while Andrew and Racine were working on Brinklow for 2nd. On lap 14 the lead went away as the yellow flew. When racing resumed it was once again Brennan Moore in control but William Racine was on the move taking over the second spot, as he was looking to make his first trip to victory lane at Brockville. As the laps clicked off, Racine started to run down the leader but would get some help as a quick yellow on lap 21 would bunch the field up once again. On the final restart Moore would switch his lines up running the bottom in turns 1 and 2 and the top lane in turns 3 and 4. Both Racine and Moore would trade lines several times over the final laps while points leader Bobby Herrington would also get close as he moved to third. On the final lap, William Racine would make it close, but Brennen Moore would not be denied scoring his first-ever Brockville Speedway Sportsman win. William Racine would score his second runner-up finish this year with Herrington third, Xavier Andrews 4th and Quebec invader Bryan Preville finishing 5th.
Earlier this year in a 30-lap DIRTCar 358 Modified feature, Jarrett Herbison crossed the line first but post-race weigh-in denied him his first career win. On his night in the 30-lap event, Herbison would take the lead from Chris Ferguson on lap two and start to pull away early with current points leader Ryan Arbuthnot trying to keep pace. The Brockville native was on a mission as he set a torrid pace in the early laps, however, Herbison’s lead would go away on lap 8 as Kalen Draper would spin in turns 1 and 2. On the restart, Herbison held the top spot but Ryan Arbuthnot was ready to challenge as he got by to take the lead on lap 9 with Johnathon Ferguson moving through to second. Both Arbuthnot and Ferguson have found themselves in a very tight points battle and the top two moved away from the field with Lance Willix making his way to the front as well as he took over third just before halfway. On lap 21 Kalen Draper’s night didn’t get any better as he spun again this time in turn 2 and the yellow flew once more. When the green flew it was Arbuthnot in control over Ferguson and Willix. Jarrett Herbison continued to run strong but Dylan Evoy, who made his return to racing, charged from 10th on the grid to challenge for a top 5 finish as well. In the closing laps, Johnathon Ferguson would get no more than 4 car lengths of the leader, as Ryan Arbuthnot would go unmatched for his 4th win of the year and first since June 10th at Brockville. Ferguson still managed a sold finish coming home second over Lance Willix Jarrett Herbison and Dylan Evoy.
The start of the Novice Sportsman did not begin well for three-time feature winner Dylan Moore, as he spun off the backstretch at the start of the 12-lap event. It did, however, begin very well for Cory Lambert as he took the lead early over Nathan Lambert and Madie Wallace. Despite the spin, Dylan Moore would charge back to the front as he battled the top 3 for the lead. On lap three Nathan Lambert would take control with Madie Wallace and Dylan Moore in a great battle for second. Over the final laps, Dylan Moore would make it close, but it was Nathan Lambert holding on for his second win in three tries in Novice Sportsman. Dylan Moore would cross in the second over Madie Wallace, Melcolm Banks and Cory Lambert.
The Mini Stock division held a 15-lap feature to close out the evening and Jamie Larocque, who was looking for something good to happen, would take the lead over Dakota Boal and 2021 champion Jarrod Galway. On the move from the 11th starting spot was Cornwall Speedway regular Dan Cook as he charged to the front eventually getting by Dakota Boal for second and then running down the race leader. Jamie Larocque was looking good to possibly score his first win of the year, but the caution would fly on lap 14, forcing a 1 lap dash to the checkers. On the restart, things got intense as Cook and Larocque both battled for the win. As they headed into turn 3, they made contact with Larocque nearly spinning out. Cook was able to keep the car pointed straight and would cross the line first for the win as Larocque spun across the line second. Matt Boal would settle for third with Jarrod Galway and Hayden Brown finishing 5th.
Next week is a big night of racing at The BOS and a new start time. The second round of the Ogilvie’s Triple Crown Series for 358 Modified and Sportsman will be taking to the speedway. Also on the card is the Eastern Ontario Mini Stock Showdown Series, the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club and the return of the PM Promotions DIRTCar Pro Stocks. Along with all this, the Novice Sportsman will join the field and the 2023 Street Stock track champion will also be crowned on this night. In total, 8 divisions with 8 feature races with Mobil One on hand as the title sponsor.
Pit gates open at 3:30 pm with spectator gates opening at 4. Hot laps for all classes will begin at 5 pm with the first green flag on the first Street Stock heat dropping at 6 pm. If you want racing, you’ll get your fill of it next Saturday, August 26th.
