Brockville – OPP is investigating after one person was pronounced deceased as the result of a boating incident.
On Saturday, September 2, 2023, shortly after 8:00 a.m. members of the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of an incident involving a vessel on the St. Lawrence River near Butternut Bay.
The report stated one vessel had flipped in the water. OPP in conjunction with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Brockville Police Service dispatched units to the area.
Two people were in the vessel. A 64-year-old from Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township was pronounced deceased on the scene. The second individual was transported to the hospital. The investigation remains ongoing with the assistance of the Technical Collision Investigation and Reconstruction team. More details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The OPP would like to remind everyone to check their safety equipment before heading out on the water including their PFD’s and wear them when on or near water. Always check local conditions prior to heading out.
