Brown’s Bay – Sixty-three paddlers came out on Saturday morning to Brown’s Bay for the third annual Front of Yonge (FOY) Paddle Poker Run.
Great weather greeted the paddlers on the beach at Brown’s Bay as they set off on a 5km or 10 km route on the St. Lawrence River in the beautiful 1000 Islands.
The first three rounds of paddlers were piped out by local pipers, Stewart Nimmo and Gord Cramb.
This is the third year of the event which was created by volunteers in Front of Yonge near the end of Covid to get people back outside enjoying nature.
This year’s winner with the best hand was Ben Huntley.
“In communities like Front of Yonge, we are so lucky to have the recreational opportunities offered by the St. Lawrence River. Paddling is a great example of active transportation and we welcome people from near and far to enjoy our community and the river in this third annual event,” said Township of Front of Yonge Mayor Roger Haley.
The Paddle Poker Run is an event that encourages people to get outside to celebrate and enjoy the St. Lawrence River. All river-appropriate paddle craft are welcome (kayak, canoe, etc.)
This is not a race, but a fun paddle that all ages and abilities can enjoy. Each paddler will follow a route beginning at Brown’s Bay that includes at least five stops or checkpoints where they will draw a playing card. The best hands win.
After the paddle, there were prizes for the best poker hand donated by various local businesses including Ar Bru Solar Brewery, Billings Automotive, KC Spencer & Associates, Luna Pizza, and Mallorytown Pharmacy.
The 4th annual Front of Yonge Paddle Poker Run is already set for September 14, 2024.
