Lansdowne – The contract for the construction of a new fire station in Seeley’s Bay was awarded by the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands at a Special Meeting held on December 18th.
The contract was awarded to JCB Construction Canada Inc. for $5,846,112, inclusive of net HST, for the construction of a new Fire Station #2.
The public tender for the construction contract closed on November 2, 2023 and thirteen submissions were received ranging in price from $5,846,112 to $8,879,465.
Construction is now anticipated to begin early in 2024 and finish in 2025. The new Fire Station #2 will be in service shortly after construction is completed and the current Fire Station #2, in the Seeley’s Bay Community Hall on Main Street, will be vacated and repurposed for another use that is to be determined.
In 2022, the Township purchased a parcel of land from the Sly family at the intersection of Highway 15 and County Road 32 as the future home for Fire Station #2. The site provides better access for emergency vehicles and removes related traffic from the Village of Seeley’s Bay. The new building will enable Fire Services to meet the needs for years to come in the northern part of the Township.
Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke stated, “The award of the construction contract for a new Fire Station #2 represents an important step in ensuring that Fire Services has the facilities and support to continue to meet the needs of our residents.” Mayor Smith Gatcke continued, “The building and location of the current Fire Station #2 poses a number of operational and community safety challenges. It is time to move forward and have a new Fire Station to service the north. In a process that will involve public consultations, Township staff will be looking at possible new uses for the Fire Service’s space in the Seeley’s Bay Community Hall.”
