MPP Clark Tables Motion Calling for a Halt to Carbon Tax Hike

Motion to be debated March 27th, 2024

Brockville– On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, will introduce a motion to be debated in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

“Over the last several months, I’ve repeatedly heard from concerned constituents and businesses about the federal carbon tax increase on April 1,” said Clark. “Even prominent NDP and Liberal politicians, including the Liberal Premier from Newfoundland and Labrador, have all come out against the carbon tax.”

Due to the carbon tax, people in Ontario currently pay an extra 14.3 cents per litre of gas, translating to roughly 10% of their fuel costs. These calculations are based on the current tax rate of $65 per tonne. On April 1, that amount will increase to $80 per tonne, an increase of over 20%. The carbon tax is driving up the cost of everything and adding hundreds, even thousands, of additional dollars in costs on the backs of hardworking people.

“Motion 82 gives all Members of the Legislature an opportunity to send an important message to the Federal Liberals: an increase to the carbon tax is wrong and should be stopped. It’s never been more important to keep costs down”, said Clark.

Motion 82: That, in the opinion of this House, the federal government should halt the carbon tax hike set for April 1, 2024, which will add 17.61 cents to the cost of a litre of gas and will therefore increase the cost of everything for the people of Ontario.
