Brockville – The Brockville Fire Department’s (BFD) new Girls Firefighting Camp, “Belles & Ladders” is now open for registration. The deadline to register is Wednesday, May 1st, 2024.
It is set to take place this summer, from July 3rd to 5th in Brockville.
To register please visit: https://brockvillefire.ca/girls-firefighter-camp/
The first of its kind in Brockville, the camp is open to young women between the ages of 15-18 years old and is free of charge for participants.
Participants will have hands-on training in skills they’d face as firefighters. The goals of this camp are to inspire young women to consider a career in the fire service, but more importantly to be empowered, and to have the confidence to believe they can achieve any goal they set their minds to.
Back in February, Brockville Fire Chief Melanie Jones, the city’s first female fire chief approached the city council to help fund the first girl’s firefighter camp. Jones ran a similar camp while with the Kingston Fire & Rescue that continues to be held.
City councillors unanimously approved funding for the girl’s firefighter camp at this meeting. As well the YMCA of Eastern Ontario is also a major sponsor of this initiative.
They are also accepting additional sponsorships for the program. All money and in-kind donations will help provide the free 3-day experience for the participants regardless of social and economic status.
Sponsorship levels include:
