Brockville – Here is this week’s TBT from the Brockville Museum.
Did you know there used to be a regular ferry service between Brockville and Morristown, New York?
Ferries like the Bruce, John Harris, Bigelow, Morrisbrock and Altair carried passengers between Brockville and Morristown for over 100 years. One of the best-known and longest-running ferries was the Elmer W. Jones. The Elmer W. Jones could make the crossing in 10 minutes. It was named after a decorated Brockville soldier who died in the First World War.
The ferry to Morristown stopped operating in 1960 when the new international bridge was opened at Johnston (near Prescott), connecting to Ogdensburg, New York.
Next week’s History Talk (April 11 at 2 pm) is on Brockville’s relationship with our American Neighbours. We’ll be exploring the industrial and transportation links between our city and the United States.
For more information on our monthly History Talks program, please visit the Brockville Museum website.
