Brockville & Gananoque Police Now Trained in Alzheimer Society’s Project Lifesaver

Brockville/Gananoque – Brockville Police and Gananoque Police had the opportunity to be trained on Tuesday by members of the Leeds and Grenville OPP Detachments on Project Lifesaver.

Project Lifesaver uses state-of-the-art technology to provide assistance allowing law enforcement to locate those who wander through the use of specialized equipment.

The Alzheimer Society of Lanark Leeds Grenville teamed up with the Leeds County and Grenville County Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to bring the United Counties Project Lifesaver six months ago.

The program is designed to protect and quickly locate “at risk” individuals prone to the life-threatening behaviour of wandering. This program has been available to residents living in the Leeds County and Grenville County OPP areas and is now available in Brockville and Gananoque.

Project Lifesaver uses technology to assist in the search-and-rescue efforts of those who wander and become lost. It has been proven to reduce the search time for police significantly; this timely response can prevent your loved one from harm.

For eligibility, participants must:

• Be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or another cognitive impairment that places them at risk of wandering.
• Reside with and monitored by a Caregiver 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
• Be a resident in the catchment area serviced by the Alzheimer Society of Lanark Leeds Grenville, Leeds County and Grenville County OPP detachments.
• Be restricted from operating a motor vehicle.

Project Lifesaver equipment requires daily monitoring by a care partner. Regular visits by an Alzheimer Society worker for equipment maintenance will be included as part of the program.
