Prescott – On May 18, Fort Wellington National Historic Site officially opens for the 2024 summer visitor season, offering guided heritage tours, historical re-enactor events, Canada Day programming, and historical weapon and cannon firing demonstrations.
In 2020, Parks Canada completed a $2.6 million rehabilitation of Fort Wellington National Historic Site defensive works. In 2022, the work completed by the construction company, BRC Group, was nominated and won the 2022 Architectural Conservancy Ontario (ACO) Margaret and Nicholas Hill Cultural Heritage Landscape Award.
Historic sites like Fort Wellington reflect the varied heritage of Canada and provide an opportunity to learn more about its diverse history. Visitors can learn more about one of the best-preserved nineteenth-century fortifications in Canada, presenting the strategic importance of the St. Lawrence River before, during, and after the War of 1812.
