Brockville – The Brockville Bunnies had a very successful weekend going 3-1 versus a couple of the Reds Academy teams and improving to 4-1 overall.
Saturday was the Bunnies home opener and double-header at Jack Giffin Field at Fulford Park where they won both games. They won their first game 8-6 over the Reds Academy Black and then 10-9 in the second game over Reds Academy Black.
In game 1, Brady Barrie started the game and Cohen Gill got the win in relief-Mattie Barkley with the save. Ryan Robinson, Hunter Sanger, Ben Buxton, Cohen Gill and Wyatt Last with two hits each with Ethan Pert getting one.
In game 2, newcomers Jack LaBrash and Ryan Crotty get their feet wet on the mound with both showing promise. LaBrash went 4 plus innings with Crotty going two and getting the win. Mattie Barkley had his second save of the day.
The second game’s highlight was with the Bunnies down 9-6 in the fifth inning with two outs, Hunter Sanger connected for a 3-run homer way back to left field. Last continued with a strong day getting three hits including a pair of doubles. Barkley with two hits and singles by Jackson Lemieux, Sean Pert, Lucas Gravlin and Noah Deryaw.
On Sunday the Bunnies were in Montreal where they one won and lost one.
Game 1 saw the Bunnies lose to the Reds Academy White 2-0, their first loss of the season. The strong pitcher for the Reds held Bunnies’ bats at bay only giving up hits to Ethan Pert and Buxton. Sanger took the loss while only giving up four hits but two unearned runs was the downfall.
In Game 2 the Bunnies won 7-5 over the Reds Academy White. The Bunnies hopped out to 7-0 lead and hung on for the win. Zadok Roiger was impressive in his debut getting the win with Barrie finishing up. Barkley and Robinson had doubles with singles by E.Pert, Sanger, Last, LaBrash, S.Pert and Gravlin.
“Bunnies coaching staff are excited about what the team has shown early on. willingness to fight from behind, putting the ball in play to put pressure on the defence as strikeouts do nothing positive, all players staying engaged in the game as coaches aren’t afraid to make changes and use the entire roster. Once we have the entire pitching staff available will be easier putting out some fires, now that we can have normal practices with Fulford being playable, all aspects of the game should improve.” they said in a post on their Facebook page.
The Bunnies travel to Welland this weekend for some exhibition games with the Bulletproof Baseball Academy. As well, the Bunnies are looking forward to this Wednesday night’s 12 and under kids clinic in honour of Patrick O’Grady.
