Brockville – The City of Brockville is once again holding its annual Tulip Bulb Giveaway between May 21st and 24th inclusive.
This year the city will set up the Tulip Pickup in the parking lot of the north end of the Railway Tunnel off of Brock Street. Please look for the orange barricades.
The city says that there will be no specific time for pickup, people will need to just check. The bulbs will be in bags of 10, (black garbage bags) and the city will drop them off throughout the day – for the next 4 days.
The city of Brockville asks that you please just take one bag, to make sure they have enough for all the people and not to approach the city gardeners while they are working, they say they are always concerned with Public Safety and Traffic.
The city does not reuse the bulbs because there are no guarantees that the bulbs will bloom in the second and third years. Each year the bulbs are planted, the Bloom Success Rate drops. Each year, the city plants fresh, first-year bulbs in each of its high-profile garden spaces, with the right amount of feed, and fertilizer in the soils, which gives them a very high success rate.
The city went on to say each year with brand new bulbs, they have a very high Bloom Success Rate, (99%), and the Gardens look amazing.
“When we give the bulbs away in bags of 10, and people simply add them to their existing garden spaces, and only 6 or 7 bloom, it’s not a terrible thing. The City’s beds of Tulips are all meticulously planted and the displays are very evenly planted. A 25% failure rate in the second year would not look very good. This is why there are fresh bulbs each year, and the Annual Tulip Bulb Giveaway” said the city in a post on their Facebook page.
