Elizabethtown-Kitley Lyn Pit Swim Program Recently Suffered from Break-In & Thefts

The swim program will proceed as scheduled this year!

Lyn – The Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley’s Lyn Pit Swim Program recently suffered a break-in with many items needed to run the program stolen.

In a recent post to Facebook, the Township said, “It saddens us to think someone would take from our beloved swim program where we strive so hard to keep the cost of learning to swim affordable as it is an invaluable skill for all ages. We have spent many years gathering supplies gradually to a point where we had what we needed for both swimmers and staff to feel comfortable and safe.”

Many of the stolen items that were in the lifeguard shed had Lyn Valley written on them including 30 life jackets, 3 First Aid Kits, All first aid supplies, a Spinal Board, 2 Propane tanks, a Garden wagon, Rubber totes, Lifeguard Rain Ponchos, Miscellaneous tools and several other items.

The Township is asking if you see something with Lyn Valley, Lyn Pit, or EKTWP written on it – and it looks like something they would use at the beach, please report it to the Leeds County OPP.

Since the thefts, the Township wanted to update everyone in a second Facebook post stating, “Our swim staff have been working hard to make sure there are no delays to the program and as such, many items for the swim program have already been ordered including the life jackets and spinal board. We have prioritized sourcing the items needed to ensure that our summer swimmers and staff are going to be safe out in the water.”

Elizabethtown-Kitley staff want to let you know that we appreciate every single share and comment that this post has gotten. Our hope was to make the community aware and encourage residents to keep an eye out for these items.” the post continued.

As well they ask anyone using the Conservation Area, please respect the area, clean up after themselves and report any suspicious behaviour.

“Several glass bottles were broken against the Lifeguard Shed in a separate incident. Please refrain from using glass when possible and if you see any glass or bottles get rid of them in the garbage cans provided.” the Facebook post continued.

The Township would also like to remind visitors that campfires are NOT permitted on the grounds of Lyn Conservation area and advise against fishing in the swimming area. They say hooks are found every year, usually in a child’s foot.

“We can’t have staff 24/7 at our parks. We count on our residents to help be our eyes and ears when we cannot be there. For those that do call in suspicious activities in our parks, we appreciate it!” said the Township.
