Toronto – The Ontario Government announced on Monday that they will add more beds to several adult correctional facilities including the newly expanded Brockville Jail.
In a press release, the Government said, as part of the government’s plans to increase capacity, two new jails will be built in eastern Ontario: the Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex in Kemptville and the Brockville Correctional Complex to replace the Brockville Jail.
As well, the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre will also be expanded to accommodate a women’s treatment unit and the Quinte Detention Centre will be expanded to add inmate programming and female capacity.
The Brockville Jail is the oldest operational jail in the province.
On August 27, 2020, the Government of Ontario announced funding for a new facility to replace the Brockville Jail as part of a larger project to renovate and replace prisons in Eastern Ontario. The new original 66-bed facility, to be called the Brockville Correctional Complex, will be constructed on the grounds of the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre., the Old Brockville Psychiatric Hospital.
The Government did not have any other information on the new Brockville Jail or the Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex in Kemptville at this time.
