Ottawa – The Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (EOJHL) has been advised that the Brockville Tikis recently conducted a prospect camp in Cornwall. Based on information provided to the EOJHL and from social media available to the public, the prospect camp was for 16-to-19-year-old hockey players wanting to play for the Brockville Tikis for the 2024-2025 season.
Further, the EOJHL has been advised that the Brockville Tikis have made representations to players and parents that they are in a position to guarantee a spot on the Tikis team for the 2024-2025 season. Moreover, the EOJHL has been contacted by at least one family that signed a document purporting to be a standard player contract with the Tikis and which prohibits the player from attending other EOJHL camps.
The EOJHL wishes to make it clear that the Brockville Tikis continue to be on a leave of absence. The Brockville Tikis did make a last-minute request to resume active operations for this upcoming season, but the request was made after the schedule was complete and, in some cases after ice and buses had been booked.
The EOJHL Board of Governors held a special meeting to consider the request of the Tikis to resume active operations. The Board of Governors voted unanimously to deny the request and on July 9, 2024, the EOJHL Chairman, Sylvain Dignard, notified the Brockville Tikis of this decision.
The EOJHL Board of Governors have confirmed that the Brockville Tikis continue to be a member of the EOJHL in good standing, but will not be active during the 2024-2025 EOJHL season and will remain on a leave of absence. Like all other members of the EOJHL, if the Brockville Tikis continue to be a member of the EOJHL in good standing and want to resume regular operations, it is required to provide the EOJHL with reasonable notice of the same.
The EOJHL is not in a position to advise players and parents about any contractual obligations they owe to the Brockville Tikis or any legal claims that may have against the Brockville Tikis. We recommend that those parents and players contact the Brockville Tikis to resolve these issues and/or retain a lawyer.
