Brockville – At the August 27th City Council Meeting council voted to back the Brock Trail Committee’s idea of John Taylor Park along the section of the Brock Trail at the corner of St. Paul Street and Water Street.
Taylor, 76, who was a passionate champion of the Brock Trail and whose efforts led to many updates and the expansion of the popular trail passed away in April after an accident.
The approval from council now allows the committee to fundraise for the new park to pay for the park dedication and a monument.
The Brock Trail Committee is a private volunteer group and needed council’s approval to be able to fundraise and issue tax receipts for the upgrades for the city-owned asset.
Council Jane Fullarton sits on the Brock Trail Committee and spoke about Taylor’s efforts on the committee saying, ““He was the champion for the Brock Trail,”
Under Taylor’s time on the committee and as chair, the committee accomplished the “elbow link” from Cedar Street to Rivers Avenue extending the trail into St. Lawrence Park, and the northern expansion from Laurier to Mac Johnson Wildlife Area.
The park area the committee wants to name John Taylor Park is the little section on the trail east of St. Paul Street to the Thomas D. Dailey Memorial Bridge.
They are planning on adding a portrait of Taylor, a story, an “art piece” commemorating Taylor, as well as seating and some minor landscaping.
The fundraising for all of the planned work has already begun.
The Brockville Kinsmen are spearheading the fundraising. Donations can be made to the Kinsmen Club of Brockville, PO Box 24, Brockville ON. K6V 5T7 (Please make cheques out to ‘Brock Trail’)
Cash donations can be made at the Brockville Pharmasave at 173 King Street and E-transfers can be sent to brockvillekinsmen@gmail.com (Please include your mailing address with e-transfer as tax receipts from the City of Brockville will be mailed to you)
