Brockville – The SLINGSHOT. No not the drop pass back to the rushing D but David vs Goliath and yes, your local David, the Brockville Braves did slew Goliath, the nationally ranked, 1st place Rockland Nationals winning 5-3 on Friday night at the Memorial Centre.
The game did have three stars (Dostaler, Gerlich and Hall) but it was a complete team effort that allowed the Braves to even their season record at 11-11-2 and down the favoured Nationals.
It was perhaps the Brave’s best first period of the season. Lumsden and Paluszak scored for the home side but they could have easily notched 2 or 3 more as they came away with a 2-0 lead.
Kellen Dostaler, the former National and the game’s 1st star scored a powerplay goal, his 12th of the campaign to offset Tellier’s to leave the Braves with a 3-1 lead after two.
In the 1st minute of the 3rd period, Grady Spicer, spearheaded a rush, a few feet short of being coast to coast and snapped one past Hogan in the Nats goal.
Peter Legostaev continued his superb play by banging in the Brave’s 5th goal, with assists to Langevin and Alexandre Cote.
Rockland dominated the rest of the 3rd, outshooting the Braves 10-6 and scoring twice. It was easy to see why Rockland has been #1 in Canada most of the season. They are a smooth skating, very fast, well-oiled machine.
In this game it was the Braves’ forechecking, diligent back checking and blocked shots which spelled the difference.
In the midst of all this, Braves netminder, Ryan Gelich from the Gopher State, performed acrobatics, to protect the Brockville net!
The Braves travel to Pembroke on Sunday to face the Lumber Kings. The puck drops at 7:00 pm.
