Charity Volleyball tournament, bake sale and silent auction more than doubles organizers’ goal!
ATHENS – The Maple View Landings Redevelopment Project (G. Tackaberry and Family Home) saw a volleyball “spike” in donations on November 16 when a charity tournament was held at Athens District High School and the organizers more than doubled their fundraising goal.
Students Katherine Pattemore and Addisan Kennedy spearheaded the event which tallied $3,043.00 which came from team entry fees, a 50-50 draw, a bake sale, a hot dog lunch, and a silent auction.
Ten teams registered, however, due to last-minute cancellations, only eight teams from the region participated. This had organizers concerned about reaching their goal of $1500. In the end, a near sell-out on the bake sale, all silent auction items being bid on, and the 50-50 draw carried the day.
The real winner however is the G. Tackaberry and Family Home being the beneficiary of this youth-hosted event.
Organizer Katherine Pattemore was thrilled with the result: “We are so happy this event worked out. We wanted to give back to Maple View Lodge – it is such a special place and Addisan and I both have had family there. This is awesome!”
Miss Pattemore said the staff at Maple View Lodge are “amazing” and they treat the residents there like their own family. “It’s an amazing facility and they deserve our support,” she said.
Members from the Maple View Landings Fundraising team were onsite with updates and large renderings of the project and Fundraising Chairman Doug Struthers commented: “It is so encouraging to see young people get involved and lead such an amazing effort. We are very appreciative of what these two girls have done,” he said, adding that their moms were a huge support for the event.
The bake sale featured everything from homemade breads and cookies to cupcakes and squares made by the high school’s cooking class.
Miss Pattemore wanted to thank everyone who donated time and items for the sale and auction.
Newly elected Warden for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, Corinna Smith-Gatcke said “We are deeply grateful to the community members who have stepped forward to support our fundraising efforts. Every contribution makes a difference, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of our donors’ generosity as we add the finishing touches to our new home, creating a space where our residents can feel comfortable and engaged every day”.
The Maple View Landings Redevelopment Project is the largest capital construction project in the history of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville at a cost of more than $86,000,000. Construction of the new three-story, six-wing building is well underway on the Maple View Landings property in Athens, Ontario and will replace the existing 60-bed Maple View Lodge facility, upon its opening expected in the summer of 2025. The existing building will be repurposed, to provide dormitory-style living, independent affordable senior living, and a licenced childcare program.
The contributions made thus far bring the campaign to the two-thirds mark of its goal of 3,000,000 dollars, now sitting at a total of over $2,230,000, thanks to additional donations from companies, service clubs, and individuals, including family members.
