Brockville – Three picture-perfect goals lead the Brockville Braves to an overtime victory, and on the other side of the coin, stellar goaltending by Ryan Gerlich sparked the Braves to the 3-2 overtime win over the second-place Cornwall Colts Friday night at the Memorial Centre.
Once again a contentious goal by the Colts left many fans leaving the rink and shaking their heads.
On the positive side, the Braves picked up their fifth point (out of 6) in their last three games. Max Treppo continues to prove his worth; that solo effort to open the scoring was a thing of beauty. He intercepted the breakout pass at the Colts blueline, waited until his teammate made it out of the zone, then split the D and fired the puck past Gavin Melcher in the Colts’ net.
Brandon Paluszak’s effort on the Braves’ second goal was no less inspiring. He broke in, spun to the outside, hesitated then slipped a pass to Buller, who dished off to Ryan McNally, who buried the biscuit. McNally (5-3-8) has been an integral factor since his return with his timely scoring and 100% effort.
On the scoresheet, the 3rd period belonged to the Colts. Adam Walker (10-5-15) returning from a suspension equalled last year’s production with his second of the night at 19:59 to send the game into overtime. The fans thought the Braves had sealed the victory in regulation when Alexandre Cote stole the puck, fired it into the Cornwall end and beat the defender to the line to prevent an ominous icing call. Cote crashed into the end boards and Walker was not to be denied.
The Braves weathered a penalty kill for the 1st two minutes of the OT. Then the LADs (Lumsden, Albright & Dostaler) who were on the ice (Lumsden & Dostaler) went to work. It was Dostaler to Max Treppo who did the leg work lugging the puck up the ice on a 2-1 scenario.
He managed a perfect pass over to Jesse “The Lamplighter” Lumsden on the left side who advanced a couple more strides before launching a rocket that beat Melcher for the win. God rest ye merry gentlemen!
But alas no rest for these conquering heroes, they are off to the nation’s capitol to play the surging Ottawa Jr senators tonight at the Jim Durrell Arena at 7:30 pm.
