
Brampton – Three locals participated in the Brampton Cup Boxing Tournament last weekend in Brampton.
Brockville’s Kristina “Killer Bee” Mabry made her boxing debut one to remember earning gold in Canada’s largest boxing tournament this past weekend.
The 24-year-old currently holds the Ontario Kickboxing Featherweight title and on the advice of her coach Mark Johnson entered the 4-day
Brampton Cup tournament to gain fight experience for her Canadian Kickboxing title shot in May.
“The Canadian Kickboxing Championships are a mirror tournament to Boxing Ontario regarding logistics,” said Johnson, “it’s a tough grind fighting Canada’s best every day over a long weekend.”
Mabry entered the 5 women’s draft as a quarter-finalist gaining a walk over DQ (disqualification) against Brantford’s Amrit Aulakh. In the semifinal,l Mabry defeated Toronto’s Lucia Sucuqui by unanimous decision.
In the final, Mabry defeated Burlington’s Laura Guest in a split decision.
“I found it slightly easier not having to defend kicks, but never expected to win against more experienced boxers,” said Mabry.
The former Miss Brockville pageant queen turned fighter trains out of Brockville’s Legends Boxing Academy and Canadian Black Belt Centres.
Mabry will be back in Brampton this weekend to face Nishka Jayasuriya on the KW Fighting Series of kickboxing on Feb 8th.

13-year-old Gordon Bush secured gold by defeating Toronto’s Mark Smith by unanimous decision in the flyweight division. The South Grenville High School student has been training for 2 years for his first and only fight of the tournament.
“I felt electric and jittery before the fight but it all faded once I entered the ring,” said Bush.

55-year-old Brad Cunningham lost his heavyweight bout in the Masters division against John Wigby of Guelph. The Merrickville Chef has been training for 3 years for his first fight.
“It was the goal to have an actual bout from the first time I put on boxing gloves and even though I lost it was one of the most memorable moments of my life,” stated Cunningham.
