City Conducts Advisory Committees Review

Brockville – City Council and staff are nearing the completion of a thorough review of Advisory Committees. Such Committees are a well-established component of municipal governance in Canada and they provide a venue for ongoing interaction between constituents, City Council, and municipal staff.

Advisory Committees make recommendations on a wide range of topics, including accessibility, heritage, facilities, and more and some are required by provincial laws.

The City of Brockville currently has eight Advisory Committees made up of citizen appointees established by by-law with various responsibilities and mandates. For more information, visit the City’s website Brockville – Meeting Type List.

The Advisory Committee review intends to ensure the work of these bodies is properly supported, resourced and effective with clear communication flowing to and from Council and staff.

Adoption of a committee by-law will provide clarity on rules and procedures governing Advisory Committees and will outline the appointment process, roles and responsibilities and detailed mandates.

Throughout the review, Committee members were consulted, and this feedback has informed the recommendations expected to come forward to the General Standing Committee meeting on February 18, 2025.

The Advisory Committee’s review is built upon the recognition that community engagement is vital for the successful functioning of democratic governments.

City Council and staff remain committed to involving the public in the decision-making processes and efforts will be made to enhance such offerings to a broad range of citizens and stakeholders.

In addition to Advisory Committees, public engagement efforts have improved to provide more engagement through public surveys, Open Houses, and interactive websites and apps, with further types of engagement being considered.

All Advisory Committee meetings are open to the public and their agendas and minutes are posted on the City’s website. Residents and business owners who wish to be considered for Advisory Committee membership should watch the City’s website and social media for the advertisement of such positions as they become available.

Anyone who wishes to share ideas or suggestions about public engagement efforts can contact Sheena Earl, City Clerk at searl@brockville.com or any member of Brockville City Council.
