Brockville – The city of Brockville posted a visual update on the Stewart Boulevard South/William Street CN Overpass on Friday on their Facebook page.
The imperative project began during the week of February 10th and is progressing well, said the city.

The deck is a cable-reinforced concrete slab that rests on top of the load-bearing abutments on either side of the overpass.- (Image #2)

With the steel railings and guards removed, the crews install a safety barrier made of steel, wood and mesh netting called hoarding. – (Image #3)
Hoarding protects the contractors from falling and protects active train traffic from any accidental debris. – (Image #4)
The railing and guards are all removed, and contractors are jackhammering away at the sidewalks. – (Image #5)

Staring on the south side of the overpass, an excavator was used to expose the load-bearing points of the deck slab.
The contractor uses heavy-duty steel jack points to lift the slab off the abutments. – (Image #6)
The load-bearing points are very deteriorated and will be rebuilt. – (Image #7)
This issue was identified during regular inspections and monitored. The bearing point has deteriorated over time due to water infiltration and freeze/thaw cycles. One of the main objectives of the project was to rebuild the load-bearing points on this 60-year-old overpass.
The work will be done on the north side once the south side is completed. – (Image #8)

Numerous communications and fiber optic conduits were known to run through the bridge structure. – (Image #9)
The communication conduits have been exposed as part of the project, and as seen are also in poor shape due to age. These conduits will also be replaced as part of the project scope.
The city posted, “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve the city’s infrastructure. These upgrades are crucial for the long-term benefit of our community. Thank you for your cooperation”
