Finch – SNC advises that a Flood Watch Statement is being issued in anticipation of freezing rain, rainfall, and snow melt next week.
Weather Forecast: Environment Canada is forecasting up to 15 cm of snow on Saturday, turning into ice pellets and freezing rain on Sunday. Rainfall of up to 30 mm of rain is forecast by Monday evening, with up to an additional 20 mm of rain forecast by the following Friday. Above seasonal temperature highs of 16°C are expected on Monday and Thursday.
Environmental Conditions: The melting of snow and ice in combination with the forecasted rain beginning on Monday can result in increased water levels and flows in local streams and rivers. Widespread flooding is not anticipated; however, fast-flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas, floodplains, and areas with poor drainage are still possible. Low-lying areas are those that are regularly flooded during the spring freshet period. Water levels are expected to remain elevated through the week due to additional rainfall anticipated on Thursday.
Risks: Rivers and streams across the jurisdiction may experience increases in water levels and flows, and embankments may become unstable. Minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage.
ACTION: Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies due to increasing river flows and slippery conditions. Any ice-covered bodies of water are considered unsafe. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.
Residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should take the necessary precautions to protect their property. Please ensure:
- The sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
- Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
- Downspouts are clear, and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
- Driveway culverts are clear of debris and drain well.
- Securing items that might float away as flows increase.
Duration: This flood watch statement is in effect until April 4th, 202,5 at 5 PM or until an update has been issued.
SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change.
