
Brockville – Conservative Michael Barrett has been re-elected to represent Leeds—Grenville—Thousand Islands—Rideau Lakes in the 45th Canadian Parliament.
The preliminary results, with 239 of 240 polls reporting as of this morning, show Barrett with 33,141 votes and 50.2% of the vote, followed by Liberal Party candidate Lorna Jean Edmonds with 29,199 votes and 44.2% of the vote, the strongest Liberal second-place finish for some time.
NDP candidate Paul Lancione came in third with 2,315 votes or 3.5%, followed by Green Party candidate Randi Ramdeen with 774 votes and 1.2%. The People’s Party candidate Hailey Simpson had 589 and 0.9%.
In our riding, Elections Canada says that 66,018 of 90,557 registered electors came out to vote or 72.9 %. (does not include electors who registered on election day.) Voter turnout was up this election from the 68.5% in the 2021 election.
In Ottawa, the Carny Liberals received a minority with 168 seats (49%), 8,335,104 votes (43.5%), followed by the Conservatives with 144 seats, (42%) and 7,928,163 votes (41.4%) and the Bloc Quebecois with 23 seats (6.7%) and 1,222,671 votes (6.4%).
The NDP won only 7 seats (6.3%) in the election.
Nationwide voter turnout saw 19,155,470 of 28,525,638 registered electors vote (67.15 %) (does not include electors who registered on election day).
Leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, lost his seat in Monday’s election. He had held his riding for seven consecutive terms, being first elected in 2004.
As well, Jagmeet Singh of the New Democratic Party and Jonathan Pedneault, the co-leader of the Green Party, both lost their seats.
The Liberal Party is also estimated to have won the popular vote, in contrast to the Conservative Party winning the popular vote in the two previous elections. Forecasts show that both Liberals and Conservatives increased their polling, while the other parties all lost ground.
