Brockville – The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #96 in Brockville will be hosting a Battle of the Atlantic Memorial Ceremony this Sunday, May 4th, at Block House Island in Brockville.
The ceremony begins at 1:00 pm, and the public is welcome.
Every year, the first Sunday in May is recognized by Canadians as a day to honour the sacrifices made by thousands of Canadian soldiers during the Battle of the Atlantic.
In 1945, Canadian forces played a decisive role in securing vital supply lines across the Atlantic, ensuring victory for the Allies. This battle remains a testament to Canada’s resilience and determination.
The Battle of the Atlantic was a crucial, prolonged naval conflict during World War II, vital for Allied victory, as it secured the vital supply routes between North America and Europe against German U-boat attacks, enabling the build-up of forces for the invasion of continental Europe.
The Brockville Legion honour our past by remembering the tremendous efforts Canadian sailors made in fulfilling their commitment to secure Allied victory, and we salute the RCN’s resolute path forward in remaining committed to the safety, security and defence at home and abroad.
The first weekend in May is set aside to remember those who served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and the Canadian Merchant Navy during the Battle of the Atlantic (BOA); the longest battle of the Second World War. It was the RCN’s defining moment, escorting large Merchant Navy convoys that carried vital supplies between Canada and the United Kingdom. The Battle of the Atlantic was the lifeline for democracy and the key to ultimate victory.
