Brockville – Here are the highlights of Tuesday, May 13th, city council meeting.

Council Approves Zoning By-law Amendments for 0 Scace Avenue and 10 Victoria Avenue

Two Zoning By-law amendments have been approved to support additional housing development in the city. Applications to support the development of a six-unit, multi-residential building on Scace Avenue and a basement residential unit on Victoria Avenue were considered by Council on Tuesday following Public Meetings and recommendations from the city’s Planning and Development Committee.

Zoning Bylaws detail how land may be used, where buildings can be located, and include requirements such as lot sizes, parking and building heights. Proposals that do not meet the exact specifications of the Zoning By-law must be reviewed and considered as outlined in the Planning Act. Efforts are also underway to conduct a full review of the Zoning Bylaw by August 2026.

Heritage Designation Process

The protection of distinct heritage properties and sites is an important aspect of sustaining and promoting attractive communities and quality of life in Brockville. Council received a report from staff outlining the process of heritage designation, impacts of recent legislation changes to the Ontario Heritage Act and clearing up misconceptions and questions, including those related to insurance.

City Council directed the Municipal Heritage Committee to provide recommendations on the designation of City-owned properties and requested that staff provide additional information about the establishment of Heritage Conservation Districts at the September Planning and Development Committee meeting. It is anticipated that the Brockville Public Library, the Brockville Arts Centre and Fire Station #1 will be presented to Council for designation consideration over the summer.
