The tunnel is now open 7 days a week from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm until sometime in the fall.
The tunnel opening is a little later this year due to work on replacing the 13 metal cabinets that house the electronic equipment that controls the tunnel’s lighting and music.
The original cabinets were not designed to sufficiently protect the equipment from the dampness and dripping water that exists in the Tunnel.
Canada’s First Railway Tunnel was completed in 1860 for the Brockville and Ottawa Railway and was later owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway until being acquired by the City of Brockville in 1983.
The refurbished Brockville Railway Tunnel originally opened end-to-end for resident and visitor traffic to much fanfare on Saturday, August 12, 2017.
