Fire Fatality After Apartment Fire on Wednesday in City

Brockville – An apartment fire on Windsor Drive in the city on Wednesday has claimed a life.

One person has died as a result of an apartment fire on Windsor Drive in the city that occurred on Wednesday before 6:00 pm.

The Brockville Fire Department (BFD) said that dispatch received multiple 911 calls at approximately 5:51 p.m. reporting a structure fire in an apartment building on Windsor Drive.

Members of the Brockville Fire Department, Elizabethown-Kitley Fire Department, Brockville Police Service and Leeds Grenville Emergency Medical Services responded to the active structure fire in the area of Windsor Drive.

A full callback was initiated by BFD, and mutual aid was requested from the Elizabethtown-Kitley Fire Department. The fire was located in a unit on the 5th floor of the 5-storey building. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire to the single unit, the fire department said.

Two residents from the affected apartment were transported by EMS to Brockville General Hospital. The building was vacated for safety, and the residents are being assisted by Victim Services until they can safely return.

Brockville Police said that one of the residents taken to the hospital has since died as a result. The other person’s condition has not been released.

“My heart goes out to all the residents of the Windsor Drive building, where a serious fire has occurred. Sincere appreciation to Victim Services of Leeds Grenville, the Bethel Christian Reformed Church, the Comfort Inn and our own Brockville Transit, who all came to their aid last night to provide support and shelter. We’re especially thinking of those who were injured and taken to the hospital. It is hoped that as many residents as possible will be able to return to their homes soon,” said Brockville Mayor Matt Wren on his Facebook page.

Police went on to say that the investigation is ongoing and involves the Brockville Police Service, the Brockville Fire Department, the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner.

The Office of the Fire Marshal arrived this morning to investigate the cause, origin, and circumstances of the fire.

Police are asking that the public remain clear of the area while the investigation is underway.
