Brockville – Brockville City Council voted at Tuesday night’s council meeting to establish a Police Services Reserve Fund.
The city stated that the Municipal Act stipulates that Council may establish various reserve funds by bylaw to be used to ensure financial sustainability in light of unexpected events or to fund future capital expenses.
The Brockville Police Services Board had requested that Council establish a Police Services Reserve Fund back in July, to allocate revenue raised through the performance of third-party criminal record checks to this fund.
Council approved the board proposal that any net surplus resulting from these difficult-to-predict revenues be allocated to the reserve fund, with 50% being put aside for future capital building needs and the other half spent at the discretion of the Board.
The city says that any deficits will continue to be funded by the city and its taxpayers. Over the past number of years, the service has maintained a surplus position.
