Brockville — The Brockville General Volunteer Association (BGVA) is proud to announce the launch of Blankets of Kindness, a community‑driven project aimed at bringing warmth, comfort, and humanity to patients receiving care in Brockville General Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit.

A blanket is more than something that keeps you warm — it is a symbol of care, security, and compassion. Each handmade blanket carries a story: the story of the person who lovingly created it, and the story of the patient or family member who receives it.

Historically, the Palliative Care Unit had a generous supply of handmade blankets available for use, but over time that supply has significantly diminished. To help replenish this vital resource, the BGVA is inviting knitters, crocheters, and quilters across the community to create and donate new blankets. The Association has set an ambitious yet heartfelt goal: collecting 100 blankets by the end of 2026.

“This project is a blend of love, creativity, and community empowerment,” says Liz Rogers, Volunteer Coordinator. “It isn’t about giving handouts — it’s about bringing humanity and compassion to the bedside for patients and their loved ones in the Palliative Care Unit at Brockville General Hospital.”

To make participation accessible to as many people as possible, the BGVA is also asking community members to donate any spare unused, washable yarn or fabric they may have at home. These materials will be made available to anyone who want to contribute a blanket but may not have the supplies to get started. Donations can be dropped off at the Volunteer Office, located opposite the Gift Shop at Brockville General Hospital.

“We’re hoping that crafters in our community will be willing to share from their own supplies, so that anyone who wants to make a blanket has access to the materials they need,” says Rogers.
