How the scam works:
A caller pretends to be your grandchild, child, or a close friend in distress. They may say they’ve been arrested, in an accident, or need help immediately—and ask for money right away.
Common tactics include:
- Claiming to be a loved one in trouble (often crying or distressed)
- Asking for money for bail, legal fees, or emergency expenses
- Pressuring you to act quickly
- Telling you to keep it a secret from other family members
- Requesting payment through cash, gift cards, wire transfer, or courier
Protect yourself:
- Pause and think – scammers rely on panic
- Hang up and contact your loved one directly using a known number
- Verify the story with another family member
- Never send money or share personal info based on an unexpected call
- Trust your instincts – if it feels off, it likely is
If you receive a suspicious call:
- Do not provide any information
