Brockville – The Brockville Braves scared the Bears but Smiths Falls gradually took over the game and came out with a 5-3 win, their 4th in a row on Friday night in CCHL action.
The Braves’ Zane Spaniol stood on his head literally. He had a highlight show (which seemed like 90 seconds) as opposed to a highlight reel, when he performed goaltending miracles, primarily without his stick, and held the Bears at bay until he was finally able to catch a Bear’s shot in his trapper. He’s looking more and more like that starter we have been searching for.
On the other side, Shaymus Stevenson was a one-man wrecking crew. He scored two goals in the 3rd, had one called back in the second (the replay operator confirmed it did hit the crossbar), and finally looked like he had another goal but Lucas Culhane did the final tap-in.
Braves were shorthanded again, with only 4 D men, and that included Kaleb MacAuley, playing his first game back after being injured in December. Those Jr B call-ups don’t look outta place though.
Captain Carolan (who scored last Saturday in Ottawa, then scored in the All-Star game) went coastal again in the 2nd period to put the Braves up 3 – 1.
Another strong performance by Jesse Lumsden, he scored a goal on an early shift as a forward, and as the game wore on, he took shifts on defence. A very valuable addition to the Braves.
