Gananoque – The Gananoque Fire Service wants the public to be aware that the fire service does NOT sell fire protection equipment to community members and is in no way associated with this business or initiative.
There have been reports of an individual/individuals who have been approaching community members on a door-to-door basis soliciting the sale of fire protection equipment recently.
They posted on their Facebook page earlier this week that “although the installation of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms (CO alarms in structures that possess a fuel-fired appliance or attached garage) is required by law, there is no legal requirement for an individual dwelling unit to possess a fire alarm system.”
They went on to say, “In fact, even if you have an alarm system in your home this system does not supersede the requirement for Smoke/CO alarms.”
They are asking that the Gananoque community remain vigilant in this area, their fire inspector wears a uniform and possesses identification.
They also say that if you are approached by someone who is claiming that you require a fire safety audit of your home, you are not required to allow them access into your residence.
In addition to this, should you have any questions or concerns regarding the fire protection equipment in your home please reach out to Community Safety Officer Andrew Kent at 613-382-3334 x 2306 and he would be happy to assist.
The fire service asks that if you or someone you know is approached by someone claiming to be a firefighter or fire inspector for sales please contact the Gananoque Police Service to report this occurrence.
