Brockville – The nationally ranked Navan Grads dropped a 4-3 decision in an overtime thriller to the hometown Brockville Braves on Friday night in CCHL action at the Memorial Centre.
Hustle, spirit, enthusiasm and some fine hockey on both sides saw the Braves end their winless streak while terminating the Grad’s roll of eight consecutive wins.
Once again a diminished lineup, fortified by some excellent APs, Sam Fisher and Peter Legostaev made adjustments and hung a big loss on the CCHL leaders. It was Keishawn Thompson’s turn to play defence Friday night and he did not look out of place.
Zane Spaniol was once again a bright light for the Braves. It ended with a saw-off on each team’s number of goalposts and crossbars.
Braves had some stellar chances for goals that didn’t materialize. In that first period Dylan Coyle, who had another strong game, fired one just over top the net; Kayden Buller’s backhander failed to elude the Grads goalie and Anoushan Mugunthan ( 11 points 6G + 5 A, in 11 games) missed on a breakaway in the dying seconds of regulation.
Zane Spaniol was deftly supported by his D-Corps ( Reid, Rak, Seibert, Arango & Thompson) and the forwards all played a 200-foot game.
It came down to Jackson Arango playing the puck off the boards allowing him and Jesse Lumsden to break in on Constagno in the Grads net. Jackson hung on to the puck till the last moment, then slipped it over to Lumsden, who buried it behind the Grads goalie, to the delight of the Brockville fans.
The Braves are in Cornwall this afternoon to play the Colts. Game time is 2:30 pm.
