Gananoque – The Gananoque Islanders lost 5-4 to the Smiths Falls Rideaus in overtime in game 1 of their EOSHL semi-final best-of-5 series on Sunday afternoon.
Gananoque got on the board first on a goal by Justynn Steven (Ryan Verbeek, Alex Rees) in the first period. In the second period, Brock Higgs (Chris Latimer, Ryan Pawlikowski) would pick up one to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead at the end of the second.
In the third period, Smiths Falls would make a comeback scoring two goals in the first part of the period.
The Islanders picked up 2 more in the third on goals by Cody Smith (Wyatt Cota, Mason Mangan) and Ryan Verbeek (Chad Duchesne, Leif Hertz).
The Rideaus would go on to score two more goals from Kyle Dowdall (Andrew Mckenney, Andrew Sprague) and Brett Costello (Andrew Sprague), with Costello scoring the goal that tied the game up at 4-4 to send it to overtime.
The Rideau’s Spenser Cobbold (Andrew Sprague, Brett Costello) would score the winning goal at 19:09 in the overtime period.
Smiths Falls leads the series 1-0.
Game 2 is this Wednesday night in Smiths Falls. Game time is 7:00 pm.
