Brockville – City council has approved the planning application for the proposed redevelopment of the former Woolworth’s property in Downtown Brockville.
At their regular council meeting held this past Tuesday a vote of 6-1 in favour of the planning application with Councilor Earl the only one voting no.
“Without trying, this development will become the tallest and perhaps the most visible building on King Street, and particularly in that area,” said Councillor Jeff Earl “If we are going with nine stories I would like to see a little more design in the building – at this stage it is a pretty blank check.” – Earl continued.
“This development checks a lot of boxes for me, checks a lot of boxes for the community, and I’m excited to see it go forward,” Councillor Cameron Wales said on Tuesday.
The redevelopment will include the demolition of the old structure and new construction including two floors of commercial space and 66 rental apartments, nine stories high.
The City’s Planning & Development Committee approved the project by the Caber Group at the committee’s April 2nd meeting.
Sixty-six apartments, that’s going to be an important addition to our downtown; that’s going to be important to every business that’s downtown. It’ll be important to every restaurant and every coffee shop.” said Councillor Jane Fullarton
The Caber Group is expected to finalize the purchase of the property later this summer, and then demolition of the old Woolworth building is expected late this fall. Construction on the new building is set to begin next spring.
