Edwardsburgh-Cardinal – The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville is excited to announce that Potentia Renewables Inc. (Potentia) has been chosen by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to build and run the Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage Project. This big project will be in Edwardsburgh Cardinal and will provide 390 megawatts (MW) of battery storage to Ontario’s power grid. It will be the largest battery storage project in Canada.
This project is a partnership between Potentia and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation. It shows a strong commitment to clean energy and working with local communities. The project will help improve the region’s energy system, support local growth, bring in business, and help reduce industrial pollution.
The storage facility will be built on 30 acres of rural land about 1km north of Dobbie Road, away from homes. Environmental studies and design work will happen in 2024 and 2025, with construction starting in 2026. The site should be up and running by 2027.
“We are incredibly proud to welcome the Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage Project to Edwardsburgh Cardinal. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to clean energy and economic growth for our communities. This is a momentous occasion for Edwardsburgh Cardinal and the entire United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this vision a reality,” said Warden Nancy Pekcford.
Edwardsburgh Cardinal Mayor Tory Deschamps said, “We are thrilled to be chosen for Canada’s largest battery storage facility. This project will bring many benefits to our township. Starting in 2027, it will contribute over a million dollars each year to our local economy and could attract even bigger projects in the future. I’m also excited about the positive impact on grid stability. Reliable, renewable energy is very important for our future, and I’m proud that Edwardsburgh Cardinal is leading the way. With a 21-year contract, this investment will benefit us for decades.”
The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville look forward to the many benefits this project will bring, ensuring a bright and sustainable future for the region.
