Oneonta NY – The Brockville Bunnies were in Oneonta New York over the weekend for their first tournament of the season, the Oneonta Green Wave Classic and came away with 2 wins and 2 losses.
The Bunnies lost their opening game on Friday to the Schenectady Indians by a score of 5-0. The game was scoreless after 3 innings before the Indians scored 3 runs in the fourth and 2 in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Charlie Todd took the loss with a solid outing only giving up 3 earned runs. A few defensive mistakes got Todd’s pitch count up but he pitched out of trouble early in the game. Ryan Crotty had a solid 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Bunnies hit some balls hard right at guys but only managed 3 hits and only a few chances to score some runs. Ryan Robinson, Jack LaBrash (solid game at 3rd base) and Ethan Pert had singles.
Zadok Roiger had a highlight catch against the fence in left field.
On Saturday in game 1, the Bunnies beat Oneonta 12-1 which was called after 5 innings. Lucas Gravlin pitched like a New York Yankee Stud with a 5-inning no-hitter only dampened by 7 walks.
After being held to 3 hits Friday night the Bunnies exploded for 11 hits vs Oneonta. The team was led by Ethan Pert (single, double,4rbis) and Ben Buxton with 2 hits and 3rbis. Charlie Todd and Gravlin also connected for a pair of hits, and singles by Ryan Robinson, Cohen Gill and Zadok Roiger.
In game 2 on Saturday in a rematch with Schenectady, the Bunnies lost 5-2.
One bad inning defensively by the Bunnies and one tough call at first going against the Bunnies were the difference in the game along with no clutch hits with runners on base.
Roiger takes the loss despite going 6 strong innings giving up 9 hits, only 3 earned runs and only 2 walks.
Pert (2singles) and Todd (single, double) continued their strong day at the plate. Gill doubled to deep left with singles by Jack LaBrash and Robinson.
In what was supposed to be a tourney format, turned into just exhibition games with the Pennsylvania team dropping out last minute..
On Sunday the Bunnies face the Schenectady Indians once again, this time winning the game 7-6.
The game went back and forth and the Bunnies took the lead for good on a two-out rbi single in the top of the sixth inning by the hottest Bunnie hitter on the weekend Ethan Pert.
Hunter Sanger had a tough weekend at the plate but came up with a clutch 2 RBI single to tie the game at 6 and played solid defence all weekend, especially in the final game making all the plays at third base.
Brockville turned a sweet 5-4-3 (Sanger to Charlie Todd to Pert) double play early in the game and then in the seventh inning to end the game the Bunnies turned a 6-4-3 double play (Lucas Gravlin to Todd to Pert) to secure the win.
Jack LaBrash goes 4.2 versus the hard-hitting Indian batters giving up 4 earned runs with Cohen Gill getting the win with 2.1 innings of shutdown relief.
Ben Buxton, Jackson Lemieux and Gravlin (single, double) all with two hits. Zadok Roiger and LaBrash doubled with singles by Sanger, Pert and Gill.
The Brockville Bunnies are back home this Saturday for a doubleheader with the Kingston Jr. Ponies. The first game is at 11:00 am and the second starts at 2:00 pm. Harps Smokin’ BBQ and Catering is the BBQ sponsor for Saturday.
