Morrisburg – From Saturday, September 2 until Monday, September 4, Upper Canada Village celebrates the integral role horses have played in Canada’s history since the 1600s with its Horse Lovers’ Weekend.

All weekend long there will be demonstrations of horse-powered jobs performed by working horses, including the opportunity for horse-drawn rides around the Village by wagon, carryall or by boat. To make it a proper celebration, there will also be music and dancing.

Horse-loving programs run all day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be performances by the National Valley Ranch Vaulters and the Capital Cowgirls Drill Team. There will be a variety of live demonstrations all weekend and workshops such as “Building Your Horse’s Confidence” and “Communicating with Your Horse.”

The weekend’s events are included in admission prices. Tickets are available on our website or at the door.

Upper Canada Village’s horses are a heritage breed, the Canadian, Canada’s National Horse, preserved thanks to a breeding program at the Village. A community-led fundraising effort to erect a statue honouring the breed at Upper Canada Village will launch Friday, September 1 at 9 a.m. at the Village, leading up to Horse Lovers’ Weekend.

One of the largest living history museums in Canada, Upper Canada Village invites guests to step back in time to 1866 and experience 19th-century rural village life. The Village offers an immersive experience with more than 40 historic buildings, traditional trades, farming, music and 19th-century social life
