Highlights from the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Council Meeting held on Thursday, July 27, 2023

Brockville – Here are the highlights from the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Council Meeting held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, as well as the Joint Services Committee Meeting of July 4, 2023, which are listed below.

Formal Acknowledgment of the Tackaberry Family’s Generosity:

Counties Council members extended their appreciation to the Tackaberry Family at a formal meeting last week.

The Tackaberry family has made donations to the Maple View Landings Redevelopment Project in Athens totaling $500,000. This significant contribution has secured the naming rights for the facility to be “G. Tackaberry and Family Home” and a neighbourhood of the facility in memory of Phyllis Tackaberry. George Tackaberry and his son, Kevin, represented their family at the Council meeting and were formally thanked.

“On behalf of Council and the Fundraising Committee, I wish to extend our sincere appreciation for your commitment to this community,” Warden Peckford said. “The future residents of the G. Tackaberry and Family Home will benefit greatly from your generosity.”

Fundraising Committee members were also in attendance at the meeting. To date, more than $1,348,180 has been raised. The redevelopment project at the Maple View Landings site is the largest capital construction project in the history of the United Counties at a cost of more than $80 million. Construction of the new three-storey, six-wing building is now underway.

Community Paramedic Long-Term Care Funding Extension (CPLTC):

The Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service continues to be eligible for up to $1 million annually for each of the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 terms, according to the Ministry of Long-Term Care.

Community paramedicine is a model of community-based health care where paramedics use their education and expertise in non-emergency care, outside their emergency response roles.

Existing community paramedic programs have reduced the number of costly 911 calls, and avoidable emergency room hospital visits, and have provided additional support and connections for high-risk or vulnerable individuals.

The program is 100% funded by the Province of Ontario.
