Brockville – BCE Inc. the parent company for Bell Media plans to sell 45 of its 103 regional radio stations including the two stations in Brockville, MOVE Brockville (CFJR) and Bounce Brockville (CJPT) in a restructuring.
Both the Bell Media Brockville stations and two radio stations in Kingston will be sold off to My Broadcasting Corporation. The sales still await regulatory approval.
This is part of a larger cost-cutting measure which includes cutting nine percent of its workforce including layoffs at Bell Media.
The announcement was made on Thursday in an open letter signed by BCE Inc. President & Chief Executive Officer Mirko Bibic that 4,800 jobs “at all levels of the company” would be cut.
“At Bell Media, our advertising revenues declined by $140 million in 2023 compared to 2022. Across Bell Media’s news operations, we continue to incur over $40 million in annual operating losses despite having the most-watched network of local TV stations,” said Bibic.
This is the second major layoff at the media and telecommunications giant. In June 2023, six percent of Bell Media jobs were eliminated and nine radio stations were either closed or sold.
In the open letter, Bibic said, “We continue to face a difficult economy and government and regulatory decisions that undermine investment in our networks, fail to support our media business in a time of crisis and fail to level the playing field with global tech giants.” said Bibic
My Broadcasting already has a radio station in Gananoque.
