Brockville – The City of Brockville council has decided to phase out its commercial and industrial vacancy rebate program at this past Tuesday’s council meeting.
The final eligible application year will be 2026. The program currently allows property owners to receive a partial tax rebate when commercial or industrial spaces remain vacant for at least 90 consecutive days.
While intended to provide relief, the program can unintentionally encourage prolonged vacancies by reducing the financial incentive to lease or occupy these properties.
Many neighbouring municipalities have already ended similar programs following legislative changes that gave municipalities greater flexibility.
