Jeremy Newman Announces Candidacy for Brockville City Council

Community leader and government relations professional offers practical judgment, responsible stewardship and effective advocacy

BROCKVILLE — Jeremy Newman today announced his candidacy for Brockville City Council, offering residents a combination of community leadership, professional advocacy experience and a practical, constructive approach to municipal decision-making.

“I am running to help ensure Brockville is governed responsibly, represented effectively and prepared to meet the needs of both present and future generations,” Newman said.

Newman moved from Ottawa to Brockville three years ago to be closer to family and begin a new chapter in his life. He already had connections to the region through family and summers spent near Lansdowne, but says Brockville became home through community involvement and service.

“I found my place by working alongside people who care deeply about this city and by taking responsibility for projects that matter to the community,” Newman said.

Newman served as Chair of the 2025 Brockville Tall Ships Festival, was a member of the transition team for the 2025 Santa Claus Parade, and currently serves on the United Way of Leeds & Grenville Campaign Cabinet.

“These experiences have taught me that successful community leadership is about bringing people together, creating the conditions for them to contribute effectively, and building a shared vision that people can work toward together,” Newman said.

Professionally, Newman has built his career in association management and government relations, working at the intersection of business, government and community.

“A strong local economy and a strong community are mutually reinforcing,” Newman said. “Good leadership requires understanding competing needs, building productive relationships and advocating effectively for the opportunities and resources Brockville needs.”

Recognizing the limits on municipal authority and financial capacity, Newman said Council must establish priorities, weigh trade-offs honestly and focus public resources where they can deliver lasting value.

Newman said his approach to municipal policy would emphasize clear objectives, proportionate action and regular review.

“Council should act where the City can make a real difference and exercise restraint where it cannot,” he said. “New policies should respond to clearly identified issues, be proportionate to the circumstances, be explained in plain language and be reviewed to ensure they are achieving their intended purpose without creating unnecessary work, undue costs or unintended consequences.”

Newman also committed to bringing a calm and constructive approach to Council.

“Disagreement is inevitable, but it does not need to become division,” Newman said. “Council benefits from a genuine exchange of views, but debate must ultimately lead to action. I would advocate vigorously for sensible, well supported policies and work constructively with others to see them implemented effectively.”

Newman said he wants Brockville to remain a city where people of every generation can see a future for themselves: where young people can build careers and families, businesses can invest with confidence, newcomers can find belonging, and older residents can continue to participate in the community they helped build.

For nearly two centuries, Brockville has endured, adapted and retained its distinctive character through periods of significant change. Newman said Council has a responsibility to respect that inheritance while preparing the city thoughtfully for what comes next.

“Our responsibility is to build on what previous generations have created and leave Brockville stronger and more capable for those who follow,” Newman said.
Over the coming months, Newman plans to speak with residents across Brockville about their priorities, concerns and aspirations for the city.

“I will not pretend to have every answer,” he said. “I will listen carefully, prepare seriously, remain open to learning and be honest about the choices before us.”
