Highway 401 Collision Near Gananoque Claims Two Lives

Gananoque – A collision on highway 401 on Monday has claimed the lives of two women.

Leeds County OPP say it involved a passenger vehicle and a disabled transport truck on Highway 401 near Gananoque.

Emergency crews responded to the collision in the westbound lanes shortly after 12:30 a.m., police reported later Monday morning in a press release.

OPP said that the initial investigation indicated that a transport truck was stopped, with safety cones out, on the right shoulder and then was struck by a passenger vehicle.

Two women in the passenger vehicle, aged 47 and 73, from the Greater Toronto Area, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the passenger vehicle was taken to hospital for assessment. The transport truck driver was not injured.

The OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team assisted with the investigation, while the Gananoque Police Service and the Ministry of Transportation helped with road closures.

The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for several hours as officers investigated and cleared the scene.

OPP asked anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dash camera footage of the area to contact the Leeds County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
