OPP East Region Remind People About Fraudsters

Eastern Ontario – A convincing phone call, a spoofed phone number, and a fake website can be all it takes for fraudsters to gain access to your banking information.

Fraudsters are impersonating representatives from financial institutions. Victims are contacted by individuals claiming there is suspicious activity on their accounts and are persuaded to provide personal or banking information.

Protect Yourself:

▪️Never trust caller ID alone. Phone numbers can be spoofed.
▪️Do not provide personal, banking, or security information to unsolicited callers.
▪️If contacted by someone claiming to be from your bank, hang up and call your financial institution directly using the number on the back of your card.
▪️Never click on links sent by unsolicited callers or provide verification codes.
▪️Monitor your accounts regularly and report suspicious activity immediately.
