Canada Road Safety Week Results: A Priority for Leeds OPP

Increasing visibility, reducing collisions!

Brockville – Members of the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid close to 300 charges during this year’s Canada Road Safety Week, which was between the dates of May 12 – May 20.

During that time, members of the Leeds OPP and of the Snowmobile, ATV and Vessel Enforcement (SAVE) Unit conducted significant patrols with one goal in mind: proactively reducing the number of collisions and fatalities on Ontario roads.

The members’ efforts did not go unnoticed: despite many calls for service and emergencies, a staggering 229 Highway Traffic Act charges were laid, and another 64 warnings were issued.

“The disregard for speed limits, distracted driving, and impaired driving are persistent concerns that demand our collective attention and action. The OPP remains committed to effectively curb these dangerous behaviours and create a safer environment for everyone utilizing our highways, waterways, and trails,” said Staff Sergeant Jones, Operations Manager, Leeds County OPP

The majority of charges involved what the OPP calls “the Big 4”:

• seatbelts
• cellphones
• speeding
• impaired driving

Some incidents of note:

• a man was arrested and charged for operating his boat while intoxicated
• two drivers were charged in two separate collisions with non-life-threatening injuries
