Brockville  Swift Waters Elementary School is set to welcome its first students through the doors on Wednesday, Sept. 4, the first day of school for the 2024-25 school year for the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB).

Swift Waters ES is the first public elementary school to open in Brockville since 1973. “This is an exciting time for our students, their families and the Upper Canada District School Board,” says Sarah Stone, Principal of Swift Waters Elementary School. “It has been an honour to be part of this historical project. We cannot wait to have our Otters together and begin learning in our new school! Our staff is incredibly excited for this new adventure.”

Leading up to the first day of school, families and community members will see play structures being installed, sodding and seeding of the school grounds, fence posts along King Street being removed, and other activities on the school site to prepare it for students. The UCDSB is also working with the City of Brockville to have upgraded crosswalks in the area completed and safety zones clearly identified, among other small projects that will enhance the safety and usability for students.

Swift Waters ES will feature 17 regular classrooms, four Kindergarten rooms, a large gym and learning commons, in addition to several green initiatives including solar panels and electric car charging stations. There will be three dedicated EarlyON rooms, which will provide programming for families and children from birth to 6 years old, and four dedicated childcare rooms with 64 childcare spaces.

The school will open with approximately 420 students enrolled, with a capacity of 504. Swift Waters ES will bring together students from Toniata Public School and Commonwealth Public School, both of which closed at the end of June 2024.

There will be a formal grand opening at the school in early October that local dignitaries and media will be invited to attend.
